Durance is known for her role as Lois Lane on the CW's Smallville, and recently wrapped production on the fifth and final season of Saving Hope.

Hatcher of course played Lois Lane on the mid-90s' series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

So, the fact that Supergirl is recasting a character that was barely used last season seems to suggest that Alura will somehow play a bigger role during the third season.

The executive producer of "Supergirl", Andrew Kreisberg, admitted that they had to replace Laura Benanti because of her commitments in NY.

"We are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara's mother", Kreisberg added.

Acknowledging legacy actors is nothing new, so really it was only a matter of time before Erica Durance appeared in the #Arrowverse, and while Laura Benanti brought a certain gravitas to Alura Zor-El, there's nothing to say that Durance can't succeed as well.

Benanti addressed her departure on Twitter.

Benanti played Kara's mother Alura In-Ze, who died in the infamous Krypton explosion, but lives on as a computer that gives Kara advice. Now, Kara balances her work as a reporter for CatCo Worldwide Media with her work for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), a super-secret government organization whose mission is to keep National City and the Earth safe from sinister threats.

'We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters, ' Kreisberg said of Durance, who played Lois Lane on the series Smallville from 2004 thru 2011.

Given that Smallville ran for 750 years, we fully expect to see some more veterans from that fan-favorite to show up sooner or later.
