Panama (2-0-1, seven points) holds a two-goal advantage over the second-place United States (1-0-1, four points), which needs to defeat last-place Nicaragua (0-2-0) by at least three goals on Saturday to finish atop Group B. Martinique fell to 1-2-0. So instead of having to face a hard opponent in Costa Rica in Philadelphia on Wednesday night, the US will now play one of the third-place teams that advance.
The U.S.is coming off a 3-2 victory over Martinique Wednesday. Instead Panama will face the Ticos.
Shortly after the restart, Dom Dwyer earned a penalty for the U.S., but his subsequent spot kick was blocked by Nicaragua goalkeeper Justo Lorente. Coach Bruce Arena is expected to avail himself of several additions to his roster - each team is allowed to add six players for the knockout stages.
U.S. was on top early as Rowe, in particular, looked risky - the midfielder firing a volley straight at Nicaragua goalkeeper Justo Lorente in the seventh minute.
Alejandro Bedoya burst clear down the right before his cross found Corona, who twisted and turned inside the area and saw his strike deflect into the bottom corner. Kelyn Rowe finished off a USMNT attack shortly before the hour mark to extend the lead for the tournament hosts. The USMNT would tack on a third goal in the 88th minute by way of a Matt Miazga header, three minutes after Nicaragua dropped to ten men due to defender Luis Copete receiving his second yellow card of the match. Nicaragua was down to nine when Luis Peralta was carried off the field.
With the win the United States has won its group in 13 of its 14 appearances in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
