The Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox sprang an all-Chicago blockbuster trade on an unsuspecting baseball world Thursday morning as the White Sox sent top starter Jose Quintana to the Cubs for a package of prospects including prized minor-league outfielder Eloy Jimenez.
General manager Rick Hahn struck and he struck potentially big.
The Chicago White Sox didn't let geographic proximity stop them from shopping their top trade chip to their crosstown neighbors.
Now add Quintana to that mix. This is the first trade between the two Chicago teams in more than a decade.
Matt Rose and Bryant Flete are the two less-heralded members of this trade. "I felt like I was maybe pressing a little too hard a few times, but I wanted to see where I was at swing-wise, what it felt like to turn and twist at that game speed, so it felt good". "We'd love to have a great prospect like (Jimenez) for the whole season".
The Cubs and White Sox have done deals in the past but it has become a rarity. Hahn said he was direct that the deal had to begin with Jimenez and Cease. He has eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 42 games this season, but more importantly, he can do devastating things at the plate ... like break stadium lights. Arrieta is 31 years old. They have plenty of work to do to get their own operation back on a winning track. "But moving a player like Quintana gives you the opportunity to add talent like this". He won a career-high 13 games last season with a personal-best 3.20 ERA while making his first All-Star team and is 50-54 with a 3.51 ERA since debuting with the White Sox in 2012. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder struck out 74 in 512/3 innings.
Orioles's starting pitching has been struggling through the first half and it plunged again when Kevin Gausman took the ball on Friday night.
As Morosi notes, the question marks surrounding the Cubs' rotation moving forward could drive them to make a deal for another pitcher.
CSN Chicago issued the above correction after reporting the White Sox traded starting pitcher Jose Quintana across town to the Cubs for four minor league prospects.
"You can read into today's move just how much faith we have in this group of guys", Epstein said, referring to his major league roster. And after being pushed to the limit before finally ending the most infamous title drought in sports history followed by a short and hectic offseason, the Cubs have looked spent all season. We make sure we have multiple looks and a high level of comfort with anyone before we put any specific proposals out there.
The Cubs and White Sox have not been frequent trading partners over the years, with this being just the fourth trade between the teams since 1992. He needed some time to process all that.
