Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena kicked off his visit to Australia on Wednesday, aiming at boosting trade and cooperation.
Also said to be high on the agenda are talks focused on combating people smuggling operations in the Indian Ocean.
Senator Birmingham welcomed the President and said Prime Minister Turnbull is looking forward to discuss bilateral relations with the President and seek his views for further expansion of cooperation.
This will be an official visit to Australia.Malcolm Turnbull stated that the deep and enduring friendship is linked with shared history of commonwealth nations with shared interest of Indian Ocean countries.
President Sirisena receives warm welcome in Australia
President Sirisena arrived in Canberra at 08:00 a.m.
The President visited the National Arboretum in Canberra and planted a Mahogany sapling to mark his visit to Australia.
The President is scheduled to meet with the Australian Prime Minister and will also hold several high level bilateral meetings.
President Sirisena is accompanied by Minister John Amaratunga, Deputy Ministers Harsha de Silva and Ajith P. Perera and MP Harshana Rajakaruna.
