Actress Sandra Bullock has pledged to donate $1 million to help the victims of flood-ravaged Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. They've been working the 12-hour night shift at a community center in west Houston for about five days, helping to feed and provide shelter to residents displaced by the storm.

And all of our Tribune sister stations across the country have stepped up big time to help raise over $400,000- and counting- for the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and local Houston charities! It's tragic, and the first thing that people do instead of balling up and crying, is they come out and help. "We rebuilt, and they're rebuilding".

"I wouldn't be able to go if it wasn't for all the support, my family, my friends, my coworkers all covering for me".

The western MA chapter of the American Red Cross needs more volunteers. Charla said. "So I took it all out and put children's books in it. figured I could read to the kids in the shelter".

Before you're certified to help victims of a catastrophe, you need to be trained.

When Hurricane Katrina devastated that area 12 years ago, she volunteered with Red Cross near New Orleans for four weeks.

Up to 30 people have reportedly been killed, while thousands have fled their homes.

In a written statement released to media, Mayo said that it was important to support "the urgent need for hope and assistance in regions affected by the hurricane".

Ybarra said the thrift store rounded up lots of linens, 200 pillows, 20 bags of clothes, and hygiene items to contribute to the Dilworth Police Department's plan to fill a trailer headed for Houston this weekend.

Amazon and Whole Foods are matching up to US$1mil (RM4.27mil) in donations made through the e-commerce site to the American Red Cross.

United Way of Greater Houston has set up a relief fund that people can donate to. They'll need to attend an in-person training - such as one taking place this Saturday in Springfield - and do some volunteer work around western MA first. With widespread flooding in southeast Texas, U.S. blood collection organizations are making efforts to meet patient blood needs and to ensure a sufficient blood supply in storm-affected areas.
