St.Lucia, Sept 2 (IBNS): It was an unusual reason which made one of the biggest cricketers in the world-Rahkeem Cornwall- to retire hurt during a Caribbean Premier League match between the Barbados Tridents and the St Lucia Stars even after he got a brilliant start to his innings recently.
Christopher Barnwell (26 not out) played a useful 12-ball cameo but it was Smith once again, who made the death overs count and completed his second century this season off the penultimate delivery as Barbados posted 195 for four in the 20 overs. Smith struck five fours and eight sixes.
Cornwall was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Obed McCoy and Kyle Mayers chipped in with one wicket apiece. Watson finished with figures of 0 for 55 from just three overs and the Tridents with 195 for 5 - the equal highest total at Kensington Oval.
Chasing 196 to win, the Stars were dealt a huge blow on the fifth ball of their innings as opener Andre Fletcher was dismissed by Ravi Rampaul for 10 runs. Cornwall was having no such troubles however and continued to find the boundary regularly enough to keep the run rate in check.
With five overs remaining and 59 required Cornwall begun to show signs of tiring, complicat-ing the Stars strategy. The 24-year old recorded his maiden T20 fifty by remaining not out on 78 runs which came off 44-balls.
On the third ball of the over, things went from bad to worse for the Stars as Samuels was caught by Pollard at wide long-on off the bowling of Wayne Parnell for 17.
Cornwall struggled with his fitness and eventually walked off the field in the 18th over and with his departure, Stars struggled to cope up with the pressure in the death overs and succumbed to a 29 run defeat as their winless tournament continues.
