Free-agent point guard Derrick Rose is in serious talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the defending Eastern Conference champions on a one-year contract, sources told ESPN on Thursday.
Rose, of course, won the National Basketball Association regular-season MVP award in 2011, but he was often injured during his tenure in Chicago after tearing his ACL the next season.
He averaged 18 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists on 47 per cent shooting over 64 games for the New York Knicks last season after being traded from Chicago in June of a year ago. He has had injuries to both knees, including ACL surgery in May of 2012, which caused him to miss the entire 2012-13 season.
Nothing hurts a free agent's value more than an injury, especially a knee injury of Rose's caliber.
It was a unusual year for Rose. The oft-injured guard hasn't played more than 66 games since his MVP-winning season in 2010-11. However, he did average 18 points per game last season, and has drawn interest from the Minnesota Timberwolves among other teams.
Something important to think about is this is a flawless guard for Lonzo Ball to have as his mentor.
Dubbed a "family issue", Rose was fined $200,000 and allowed to start the following game.
A person familiar with the negotiations says the Cleveland Cavaliers are discussing a contract with former NBA MVP Derrick Rose. However, he could be a nice fit for the Lakers. He is arguably the franchise's best player since the Michael Jordan era and has an important place in the history of the team. It would also add a veteran point guard to help take some of the load off starter Kyrie Irving in the backcourt.
With the Cavs, Derrick Rose would be backing up Kyrie Irving rather than chasing him. He played in 64 games for Chicago in 2015-16 and 64 for NY last season, all of them as a starter.
The Chicago Bulls signing Rose would certainly be an interesting development.
