A Texas company is recalling coffee after a Viagra substance was found in the product.
"Desmethyl carbodenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, an FDA-approved prescription drug for erectile dysfunction", the FDA said in a statement.
No injuries have been reported, but the FDA says the undeclared ingredient could interact with prescription medicine and lower blood pressure to risky levels.
The ingredient in question, desmethyl carbodenafil, may react with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, dangerously lowering blood pressure, and poses a risk to men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease.
Yee said he was not sure how much coffee was involved in the recall, but estimates he'll receive a few hundred to a thousand bags from customers that he will hand over to the FDA for destruction. A serious or deadly allergic response could occur if the product is consumed by anyone with a milk allergy.
In 2016, officials at the FDA advised the public in general not to purchase a product that was similar known as Stiff Bill Herbal Coffee.
Earlier this year, the FDA issued a recall notice when one person died after drinking a male enhancement coffee made by Caverlo.
The FDA has been cracking down on coffee products that contain desmethyl carbodenafil, a chemical similar to the active ingredient in Viagra.
Bestherbs, which is based in the Dallas suburb of Grand Prairie, sold the coffee nationwide from July 2014 through June 2016 on various websites and in some retail stores.
The company was sent messages through email and left on voicemail for any comments they might want to add to the FDA pressure to make a voluntary recall of their coffee but none of the messages were answered. Bestherbs Coffee will offer refunds to consumers who return any unused product to the company.
