Teenage heartthrob, Harry Styles is making his Hollywood movie debut with this film and does justice to the role of Alex. So many war movies have been made, but Dunkirk was one massive incident that was not fully explained simply because it showed the Allies in poor light - staring at humiliating defeat and the only reason they escaped was because Adolf Hitler failed to grab the opportunity to go in for the kill. "I would have been excited for it even if I had no involvement". Of the three stories, this one is the least emotionally involving, in large part because Hardy is hidden behind a pilot's mask for most of the film. Nolan regular Tom Hardy is cool and collected, and Mark Rylance delivers the flawless mix of head and heart. Going in with nerves was a good thing. "He's not in a tent; he's in the water with you; he's cold; he's the first one there and the last one to leave".
"All these guys were abandoning everything they had, any worldly possessions, to get on the boat and get out, because they didn't want the boats to get weighed down with their cameras", says Delaney. He proved his writing and directing skills with every feature, from "Memento" to "Inception", "The Dark Knight" trilogy and "Interstellar".
"You're just plunged straight into this world and you're sort of swept along in it".
Despite him showing up late, I'd venture that Styles might have the most lines in the entire movie. Now, after reading this you might be thinking "That sounds rad!"
"Just to be involved in the whole process was a great new experience for me". With the exception of George, the only name I remembered, there wasn't a character I could grab onto and invest, emotionally, in their performance. "I felt very grateful to be involved". Nolan was very confident in his decision to cast Hardy as he has previously worked with the actor.
But, though Dunkirk isn't considered an outright win, many believe the success of the evacuation - known to many as the "Miracle of Dunkirk" - served as a much-needed morale boost for the British and Allied forces as they continued fighting the war, in which they ultimately triumphed. "There was no ego - he was the same as everyone else on set", Whitehead says. The filmmaker, who has dealt with the space, superhero genre and deepest depths of imagination, has brought one of his passion projects to life which he had dreamt for the longest time.
But he's not called Harry Styles. Nolan, 46, said. "And that changes your creative process, but in an exciting way".
"Of course, for this film, I've suddenly turned around and realized actually it's the first time I've really dealt with something real, certainly the first time I've dealt with something based on real history".
