In Britain's third Islamist attack in as many months, three men rammed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge on Saturday night before running into the bustling Borough Market area, where they slit throats and stabbed people indiscriminately.
Khuram Butt, 27, was married with children and lived in Barking, east London, for a number of years. Eight officers fired their weapons and the attackers were killed eight minutes after police were called to the scene.
Bangs and gunshots have been reported as two more addresses in east London were searched by police in connection with Saturday's deadly terror attack in the capital. Redouane claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan. When using the Elkhdar name, Redouane also went by a different date of birth that put him at 25 years old, police said.
Like May, senior police officials described a recent spate of terror attacks - the bridge rampage was the third major strike in three months - as posing an "unprecedented" threat.
The Yard said that intense work to improve counter-terrorism databases meant there was an increased chance that when an attack took place it would be found that police or the security services had known about one or more perpetrators.
It's not clear when that call came in - and what other cases were pressing - but ultimately Butt was not considered a priority and he was placed in the lower echelons of the long list of individuals under investigation.
Butt is believed to be the man seen in a British television documentary on jihadists within the country that aired past year.
LONDON (AP) - The knife-wielding attackers appeared to be leaving the restaurant where Candice Hedge was hiding under a table when one of them spotted her, returning to slash her throat, the 34-year-old waitress' father told an Australian newspaper.
Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said Sunday that a member of the public suffered gunshot wounds as officers opened fire and stopped the attackers.
One woman, who didn't want to be named, said he stared angrily whenever he saw women cycling on the estate.
On Monday evening in London, a massive crowd gathered at Potters Fields Park, adjacent to London Bridge, to hold a vigil and pay tribute to those slain and the survivors of the attack.

The Islamic State militant group, which is losing territory in Syria and Iraq to an offensive backed by a USA -led coalition, claimed responsibility for the London Bridge attack, though it is unclear whether the attackers had links to the group. "One of the arrested men and one of the women were subsequently released".
May served as home secretary for six years before becoming prime minister last year, a period in which the number of police dropped by about 20,000 officers.
The attacker, who had at least two older siblings, can be seen in last year's TV documentary arguing with police officers in the street.
Authorities said 36 people remained in hospital, with 18 in a critical condition.
"Chrissy was a bright light to many, and her generosity, kind spirit and huge heart for her work in responding to issues of addictions and homelessness at the centre inspired us all". Ho intervened as the attackers tried to knife a bouncer at a pub, the newspaper said.
