The top superhero films are dominated by Marvel.
This weekend, Wonder Woman came to the aid of DC Comics, whose movie franchise was in desperate need of a revival. The previous mark was Sam Taylor-Johnsons Fifty Shades of Grey, with $85.1 million in 2015.
The film earned an additional $122.5 million worldwide.
Obviously among Amazonian warriors Wonder Woman is closer to mid- to late-20s, but that's how slow-aging superheroes work. Chris Pine: The chemistry between Gadot and Chris Pine is the connective tissue of Wonder Woman, as the movie focuses much of its runtime on the relationship between Wonder Woman/Diana and the wily double agent Steve Trevor. "And I think it's Wonder Woman".
"I found after a while always being surrounded by men doing this job, the impression comes up that it's maybe not a good job for a woman", Ade said.
Tonal shifts aside, Wonder Woman is groundbreaking in a much more important way.
Wonder Woman shows that a woman can be more than a mere damsel in distress.
Imax theaters accounted for $18.3 million globally - the third biggest launch for a DC Comics film - including $9 million domestically. The fourth offering from the DC Cinematic Universe has captivated fans in its opening weekend, earning $103.1 million at the US box office. The movie's characters also include Professor Pippy P. Poopypants (Nick Kroll) and a school snitch named Melvin Sneedly (Jordan Peele).
Directed by David Soren and produced for a very modest $38 million (by comparison, the budget for this year's The Boss Baby was $125), Captain Underpants is the final DreamWorks Animation feature to be distributed by 290th Century Fox following DWA's sale to Comcast-owned NBCUniversal.
But "Pirates" still sails well overseas.
The critical reviews for "Wonder Woman", meanwhile, have been astoundingly high. And in China, the movie's total has climbed to a mighty $143 million. "A perfectly cast Gal Gadot in the lead role coupled with a great release date, killer marketing campaign and above all a great movie that has both critics and audiences buzzing on social media, contributed to this better than expected result", said movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore. "Baywatch" rounds out the top five this weekend with about US$8.5 million from 3,647 locations. The R-rated movie fell almost 55 percent. Self Contained Story: In a cinematic universe filled with overstuffed movies and seemingly endless cameos-Wonder Woman is a rare superhero movie that manages to keep it contained to one character.
