The gold went to newcomers Shane O'Driscoll and Mark O'Donovan in the light-weight pair.
Winning in a time of 6:32.340, they had seconds to spare over Russian Federation in second and Italy in third place. France were way out in front by the time the O'Donovans, who won gold at this event previous year, really got moving, but the Irish pair passed the Poles and dramatically pipped the Italians for second on the line.
"Dominic Casey [the coach] wanted to make us hungry so he kept us away from the... He only made us train once a week to make us hungry and by God we'd a hunger", O'Driscoll said.
A brilliant start to the morning for Ireland and Skibbereen was following up by another medal, silver for Denise Walsh in the lightweight's women's single sculls.
The investment has contributed to the success of the Irish rowing team with rowers Paul and Gary O'Donovan making history last August when they bagged an Olympic silver medal in the lightweight men's double sculls race.
The French pair of Jeremie Azou and Pierre Houin took gold in a time of 6:17.67 with the O'Donovans 2.4 seconds behind them.
"The field is so damn tight", Gary O'Donovan.
