The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman sadly passed away at the age of 52 on Wednesday (17.05.17) night, and it has now been reported by medical officials that the star hanged himself inside his hotel room at the MGM Grand Hotel in Detroit, Michigan.
Rocker Dave Navarro mourned the loss of Cornell, tweeting: "Such a awful and sad loss!"
In 2012, Soundgarden returned with its first studio album in about a decade and a half - a fact NPR's Rachel Martin mentioned in a 2015 interview with Cornell, shortly after he had just released a new solo album.
Among his most famous songs were Soundgarden's 1994 grunge theme Black Hole Sun, and Hunger Strike - a 1991 hit for another of his rock bands, Temple Of The Dog, where he teamed up with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder.
His theme song for 2006's James Bond film Casino Royale broke into the Top 10 in the United Kingdom singles chart.
Before ripping into a cover of the Soundgarden classic Outshined, Mustaine added, "I don't sing like Chris, I could never sing like Chris, but we're gonna sing a song right now".
Cornell formed Audioslave in 2001 with former Rage Against The Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk. "We appreciate the patience and understanding of the music community during this hard time and we will have more to share in the near future".
"It occurred to me that there was no guarantee that as a musician I would ever have any kind of financial success, but I was fine with that".
Rodgers described Cornell as "my special brother". "There's no doubt that Soundgarden's music is very dark and melancholy at times".

The band released three albums in six years and also performed at a concert billed as Cuba's first outdoor rock concert by an American band, though some Cuban artists have disputed that claim. He and Vicky have two children together - Toni and Christopher Nicholas Cornell.
