Earlier in the day, Maxwell, who was born on an American military base in Germany and is the son of an Army officer, took to Instagramand profanely expressed his thoughts on President Trump bashing National Football League players for protesting the anthem.
Maxwell was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, when his father, who also is named Bruce, was stationed there with the Army. Teammate Mark Canha placed his hand on Maxwell's shoulder in support.
Maxwell had his hand over his heart while facing the flag as the anthem was played.
Maxwell posted a few Tweets about President Trump's attack against athletes using their platforms to exercise their freedom of speech.
Other football players have followed suit, but Maxwell is the first baseball player to kneel during the anthem.
"The Oakland A's pride ourselves on being inclusive", the statement read.
Maxwell appeared to be moved to kneel after being troubled by President Trump's "son of a b--" comment Friday night about those who kneel in the NFL. He criticized President Donald Trump on Instagram before the game, saying in part, "our president speaks of inequality of man because players are protesting the anthem!"
