They combined for five points Saturday night to help Nashville pull within 2-1 of the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup Final. Rinne made 23 saves for the night and the Predators are now 9-1 at home.
Pittsburgh Penguins' Jake Guentzel, right, watches as a puck slides past Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne, of Finland, Colton Sissons (10) and Ryan Ellis, left, during the first period in Game 4 of the NHL hockey Stanley. It was Crosby's first eighth goal of the playoffs, but his first in the final since 2009.
Gaudreau's goal came on a wraparound, but the horn sounded a little later because of video review.
Play continued for 35 seconds before replay officials in Toronto stopped the action, realizing the puck eluded Murray's stick enough to cross the goal line. After being awful in the first two games of the series, Nashville's domination in Game 3 gave him some confidence. An empty net goal from Fillip Forsberg sealed the 4-1 win.
Malkin finished with two shots as the Penguins ended up being outscored 9-2 in Nashville.
No one expected Rinne to continue his otherworldly performances from the opening round against Chicago where he posted a pair of shutouts during a four-game sweep, and it didn't as his numbers slowly dipped over the next two rounds.
He streaked in on a breakaway and beat Matt Murray on his glove side with a laser-like wrist shot. "It's simple. We gotta go home and win a game". Matt Murray (22 saves) had stopped Craig Smith's initial deflection of Austin Watson's shot, but Jarnkrok's follow gave him five points - one goal and four assists - in the past five games.
And most importantly: Who will win the series?
Olli Maatta - Pittsburgh's blueline had trouble keeping up with Nashville.
Rookie Frederick Gaudreau and Swedes Calle Jarnkrok, Viktor Arvidsson and Filip Forsberg scored for Nashville while Finnish goalie Pekke Rinne made 23 saves for the hosts as they won a second consecutive game in the best-of-seven series. "We played two really good games".
"Amazing, wonderful job", Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne said.
Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin heard all the questions about not getting a shot on goal in Game 3.
"As you can see by the way we play, our defensemen have the green light to add to the rush or lead the rush, take charge offensively in the offensive zone", Laviolette said Sunday.
Nashville will be leaning again on its defense corps to try to send this series back to Pittsburgh all tied up.
The score was tied 1-1 in the second period when the Penguins' finishing touch left them.
First, there's the pad stop on Sidney Crosby during the breakaway, plus he gets a piece of that rebound. He also moved into 20th all-time in National Hockey League playoff points but the Predators clamped down after that.
