Connery, who was the first James Bond and played the spy in seven films, said the pair had an "unusually long" and happy friendship.

Moore's three children - Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian - announced his death through a statement shared on Twitter Tuesday.

"With the passing of Sir Roger Moore, the world has lost one of its great champions for children - and the entire UNICEF family has lost a great friend", UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said in a statement.

"The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it can not be quantified in words alone". They said: "Thank you Pops for being you, and for being so very special to so many people".

Before adding: "Our thoughts must now turn to supporting Kristina [his wife] at this hard time". "Our thoughts must now turn to supporting Kristina at this hard time, and in accordance with our father's wishes there will be a private funeral in Monaco", it read.

In agreement, one fan added: "My heart is broken". "But Sean, Sean really was sort of not that enamored of being confused with James Bond all the time".

Barbara Bach, who played opposite Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me as Anya Amasova, mourned the late star as well.

Sir Roger was made Commander of the order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1999.

Britt Ekland - who was Bond girl Mary Goodnight to Moore's 007 in 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun - took to Twitter to mourn the 89-year-old actor on Tuesday.

Born Roger George Moore, on October 14, 1927 in the south London neighbourhood of Stockwell, he was the only son of a police constable and his wife, and had a happy childhood.

Along with his turn as Bond, the Brit icon will also be remembered for his starring role as Simon Templar in TV series The Saint.
