The state-run IRNA news agency quoted chief of the Guard's airspace division, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, as saying that the new missile, named Khoramshahr, "can carry several warheads for various uses".

Iran will strengthen its missile capabilities and will not seek permission from any country to do so, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said.

The report said the missile was launched late Friday, without providing further details.

On Friday, the Iranian armed forces remembered the 1980-1988 war between Iraq and Iran by holding a parade in which Iran's most advanced military power and abilities are showcased.

In a speech broadcast on state television, Rouhani said: "We will increase our military power as a deterrent". We will strengthen our missile capabilities ... The country had previously been known to have a missile of similar range, the Shahab-3, which was based on a North Korean missile.

Iran also displayed myriad of other home-made advanced missiles, including ballistic missiles, which are reported to have a range of 1,300 km-2,000 km.

Trump put Iran "on notice" in February for test-firing a ballistic missile and imposed new economic sanctions in July over its missile program and "malign activities" in the Middle East.

The news report cites that detail as being "much to the chagrin of President Trump and company" - but 2017 isn't the first time the US has aired its concerns over Iran's rocket and missile research.

Modanlo was released from federal prison in January 2016, as part of the U.S. -Iran prisoner swap that included Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian.
