"We're still investigating that", Cotter said.

According to the investigation, the killer and his wife went to Graham's office at South Bend medical center for an appointment Wednesday morning.

Still, the doctors acknowledged some patients need the stronger painkillers, either because of severe chronic pain or because they can not take other types of medicine.

Cotter says Jarvis returned to the medical center about two hours later and shot Graham.

Graham was on his way to the St. Joseph Rehabilitation Institute near his office.

There were two witnesses who were outside and in close proximity. "Jarvis went to those two witnesses and told them to leave. They saw a gun".

Authorities said Jarvis then fled the scene and drove to his friend's house, mentioning "that he was no longer going to be around", Cotter said. The police arrived when he was already dead. Cotter added that Jarvis' wife had no idea that her husband had returned to the doctor's office and had shot the doctor. "She's suffering as well", he explained.

Emergency rooms also have cut back on opioid prescriptions, Park said, choosing to call a patient's family doctor for guidance, especially if a patient has a pain contract that requires other providers to consult that doctor.

According to Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett, the shooting could have turned into a far more serious situation if Jarvis had entered the medical facility.

Police added that they fear if Jarvis had made his way inside the hospital, it could have turned into a mass shooting. "I do believe that".

Graham, 56, has three children, according to physician A.J. Mencias, his friend and business partner. He had three children.
