Politz pitched the regional's opener in which the Bulldogs, seeded third, upset #3 Nebraska, 5-1.
A 2-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday night - after the shocking 8-4 win over No. 2 national seed North Carolina the night before - means Davidson is one win from the super regionals in its first appearance in the tournament. Despite Holy Cross causing some tense moments throughout the first half of the game, the talented righty put together yet another strong start and helped guide the Beavers to an 8-2 win over the Crusaders.
"One of our goals was to win our regional", Oregon State coach Pat Casey said. "We understand what next weekend's all about".
Oregon State now awaits the victor of Clemson and Vanderbilt, who are playing Monday at 1 p.m. PT. The Golden Eagles are in regionals for the 27th time and took two of three against the Big 12's Cowboys in the regular season. The 2017 Beavers have already clinched the school's best winning percentage.
"It's so clear to me that Pat recruits and nurtures high character kids", the coach said, before offering words that might have made his counterpart cringe.
The Beavers are set up perfectly, playing at home (they're 29-1 at Goss this season) and not having to travel for the Super Regional.
Table-setters Steven Kwan (3 for 4), the regional's Most Outstanding Player, and Nick Madrigal (4 for 4) collected seven of OSU's 12 hits. Doing what he could meant turning in a 4-4 performance with 4 bunt single in the game.
Thomas Espig was the hard-luck loser for the Bulldogs (34-18), who defeated fourth-seeded Holy Cross earlier in the day.
Southpaw Brandon Eisert got the win in relief, going 3 2/3 innings. Jake Mulholland entered in the eighth to pitch for an inning and two thirds. The right-hander struck out five end walked one. Rasmussen was allowed to finish the inning but was removed after throwing just 73 of his allotted 95 pitches.
"I thought he was overthrowing a little bit and excited", Casey said.
Rasmussen didn't have his best stuff in the start but was able to work through it and limit Yale getting out of jams, largely in part due to the defense. Rasmussen later walked Benny Wanger but wiggled off the hook with a strikeout and fly out to the warning track in left.
After being outscored by OSU 19-1, Stuper sees big things ahead for the Beavers.
Gretler, who hit two homers in the Corvallis Regional, also made the all-tournament team at third base along with teammates KJ Harrison (first base), Cadyn Grenier (shortstop), Adley Rutschman (catcher), Trevor Larnach (designated hitter) and Luke Heimlich (pitcher).
Kwan and Madrigal reached on infield singles, putting two on with nobody out. But he got out of the first inning with just one run on the scoreboard.
Two at-bats later, third baseman Michael Gretler took a 2-2, two-out pitch well over the left field fence to clear the bases and push the margin to 6-1. Tim DeGraw padded the lead with an RBI single in the fourth, and Dai Dai Otaka added one in the sixth. "I really appreciate the type of guys they were as far as teammates and being bought into what we do".
Michael Gretler went yard twice, Harrison broke a vehicle window parked behind the left field fence and Steven Kwan (the Regional's Most Outstanding Player) finished with eight of the team's 41 hits on the weekend. Burkamper lasted only two more batters, hitting Bill Schlich with a pitch and serving up a two-run double to Austin Masel. He returned to his outfield position for the final elimination game that night against Oregon State but was still given the second base spot on the All-Tournament team.
