Khorramshahr ballistic missile has a range of 2,000 kilometers with ability to carry 1,800 kilograms multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV), he added. Iran says it has no such plans.
The test comes at the end of a heated week of diplomacy at the UN General Assembly in NY, where US President Donald Trump again accused Iran of destabilising the Middle East, calling it a "rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed and chaos". He also linked the action to recent aggressive moves by North Korea.
In February, Iran test-fired the same medium-range type of missile, prompting Trump to say that the USA is "putting Iran on notice". They are also working with North Korea.
If he decides that it is not, it could open the way for renewed USA sanctions and perhaps the collapse of the agreement.
Tehran says that the missiles are entirely legitimate under the terms of the deal as they are not created to carry a nuclear warhead.
"Iran has released footage of the successful test-launch of its new ballistic missile, Khorramshahr, a few hours after it was unveiled during a military parade in the capital city of Tehran", Press TV said.
Speaking at the parade, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani promised his country's military would keep pressing forward. Britain expressed similar concerns on Saturday.
US President Donald Trump addresses the 72nd Annual UN General Assembly in New York
"Extremely concerned by reports of Iran missile test, which is inconsistent with United Nations resolution 2231".
"On the one hand Iran is trying to demonstrate they are the pragmatic rational actor here and maintain unity among the other signatories of the nuclear agreement, even if from the USA side it starts to unravel", Vakil told CNN.
On Thursday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has final say on all major policies in Iran, said Trump's "cheap, ugly, foolish and unreal" remarks before the U.N. General Assembly were a sign of desperation. "(France) will consider with its partners, notably European, the means to obtain from Iran the cessation of its destabilizing ballistic activities".
"The result is that Iran's military continues its march toward the missile technology to deliver a nuclear warhead".
He also criticized the 2015 pact that the United States and six other powers struck with Iran under which Tehran agreed to restrict its nuclear program in return for relief from economic sanctions. "When it comes to defending our country, we will ask nobody for their permission".
Iranian officials have argued that the measure only applies to missiles specifically created to carry nuclear warheads.
"It is also a means to test our reactions as well as new proof of Iran's ambition to become a world power in order to threaten the countries of the Middle East and democratic states around the world".
