About 250 residents in Kampung Tambak Paya have been told by the police to revacate their homes to enable displacement works involving seven chlorine gas drums this evening. He said the company which owned the chlorine gas cylinders engaged another company to help transport the cylinders.
"We are investigating whether the drums were dumped (by the company) or if the responsibility to dispose of the chemical substances was given to others".
DCP Abdul Jalil said the chemical was used by the company involved in the water industry.
"There is a possibility that the suspects meant to dispose the chemical by using the easy way out instead of sending it to a proper facility like in Bukit Pelandok, Negri Sembilan", he said. So far, 40 people were still being treated at hospitals in Melaka and Jasin.
"The witnesses saw yellow smoke coming out of a drum before they started feeling nauseous and began vomiting".
Several dozens villagers including firemen were rushed to the hospital for treatment on Thursday after inhaling the chlorine gas from one of the cylinders, that had a leak, left abandoned at a vacant house in the village.
"Most of the victims were allowed to return home today, and the police operation room, which was opened following the incident, is expected to be closed this afternoon", said Afzanizar.
