Named the "Castaic Fire", the brush fire quickly grew to a second alarm brush fire and burned a total of 20 acres as of 5 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire is coming amid triple-digit heat in the San Fernando Valley. The 210 was closed in both directions and motorists were advised to avoid the area. Then, Stewart said, high winds indeed caused embers to created a spot fire a quarter-mile away from the initial blaze, across the 210 Freeway. Firefighters are working to prevent the spot fires from crossing the 210 Freeway.
Because of the fire's growing threat to the area, traffic on both sides of the 210 was closed at La Tuna Canyon Road. Approximately 300-400 firefighters are on the scene, according to LAFD. Approximately a dozen homes on the 8300 block of La Tuna Canyon Road have been confirmed as being threatened, with an unknown additional number of homes also threatened.
The fire was reported just before 1:30 p.m. near the 10800 block of La Tuna Canyon Road south of the freeway.
No structures are now threatened and none of the fire is contained at this time.
