A photo showing an inappropriately placed sign that reads "Own the School Year Like a Hero" located directly above a glass case filled with guns went viral on social media Wednesday, Aug. 9, sparking outrage and backlash from concerned customers.

People cried foul on Twitter and demanded an explanation from Walmart.

Walmart officials are still investigating where the photo was taken.

Walmart issued an apology following the incident, saying through a spokesperson that 'What's seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores'.

Walmart did not immediately respond to Daily Dot questions about the sign and in which store it was placed.

According to The New York Times, members of the company's social media team initially said on Twitter that the sign had been hung in a store in Evansville, Ind. and were happy to report it had been removed.

"We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened".

This morning, Walmart issued a statement and apologized for the display saying it was a "truly bad".

"We have already lost so many innocent lives to guns", she said. One person asked: "What are you suggesting?"

Crowson told CNNMoney on Wednesday evening Walmart was still trying to find the sign and gun display.

That tweet, though, wasn't the first time Walmart heard about the signage situation. 'This was awful and we removed the sign as soon as we found out'.

Last September, a Walmart in Panama City Beach put up stacked boxes of Coca-Cola to resemble the World Trade Center in an apparent attempt to commemorate 9/11.
