Ireland's 400m hurdler Thomas Barr was also forced out of his semi-finals on Monday.

This includes Botswana's Isaac Makwala, forced to withdraw from the 200 metres heats last night and who is among the favourites for a medal in tonight's eagerly-anticipated 400m final.

But while she may have quit global athletics, that's not to say Martin's running career is totally over.

London 2017 said in a statement: "There have been a number of cases of gastroenteritis reported by team members residing within one of the official team hotels for the World Championships".

"Athletes who have finished competing already have been offered a flight home to protect their health".

It led the team to re-distribute 30 more athletes who arrived in London this week to avoid the hotel where the outbreak started.

"We continue to liaise with the medical authorities and the IAAF to ensure the comfort of those guests affected and the health and well-being of all our guests remains a priority".

"Those affected have been supported by both team and LOC medical staff". In addition we have been working with Public Health England to ensure the situation is managed and contained.

The Canadian and German teams staying at the Tower hotel, near Tower Bridge, were believed to have been affected by the bug.

"As a result, further advice and guidelines have been issued to team doctors and support staff".

The London hotel at the center of an outbreak of sickness that has struck down scores of competitors at the World Athletics Championships said on Tuesday it was not the source of the illness.

PHE announced on Thursday the number of individuals to have reported illness has risen to "approximately 40", with cases of norovirus now standing at three.
