Aroldis Chapman is out as the New York Yankees closer.
Chapman was asked to pitch the eighth inning Friday with the Yankees down a run to the Red Sox, but the flamethrowing closer once again struggled, allowing two runs in his inning of work and failing to keep the deficit in place. Instead, Dellin Betances and David Robertson will be used based on the situation, to allow flexibility. It includes a game earlier this week against Boston in NY in which he blew a lead in a 3-2 loss.
Chapman gave up two more runs as part of a larger bullpen implosion Friday night as the Yankees suffered a 9-6 defeat to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
"He knows that he needs to get back on track and that he's scuffled a little bit", Girardi said.
NY is five games behind the Red Sox in the American League East and can't afford to give up anymore games if it wants to win the division to avoid playing in the one-game wild-card playoff.
Things have not been going well for Chapman.
His inclination is that it will be a positive for him.
As a result of his recent ineffectiveness, Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced Saturday afternoon that Chapman is out as his closer, at least for the time being.
