The president fueled the speculation with one angry tweet and interview about Sessions after another.
"But, Tucker, I thought the experts in the Department of Justice, people who are trained in that, I'm confident I made the right decisions - a decision that's consistent for the Rule of Law and an attorney general who doesn't follow the law is not very effective in leading the Department of Justice".
Since last week, Trump has continually criticized Sessions, one of his earliest supporters, for deciding to recuse himself from overseeing the politically fraught investigation of whether Trump's campaign had any connections to Russia's attempt to meddle in America's presidential election.
Can we move on now?
And in an interview with the AP, Sessions said, understatedly, that it had not been the "best week", between him and Trump, but that they share a "harmony of values and beliefs".
"I think it's the public expression of it that rattles people", Carlson challenged, "the idea that you would attack someone who works for you on Twitter and I wonder if you worry personally if the president was displeased with you that he might tweet about you that way".
Trump released an unrelenting stream of tweets and interviews, expressing disdain for Sessions' decision to recuse himself from all investigations relating to Russian Federation.
"He's disappointed with the Attorney General's decision to recuse himself and to not know about his intention to do so before he was confirmed as the Attorney General of the United States".
"I'm going to make you a promise", Mr. Pence said.
Sessions told both Fox and the Associated Press on Thursday that he acknowledged the president could fire him at any time. Ben Sasse (R-Neb) said Trump can just "forget about it". The president should compose a "thank you" letter to Sessions, because even though he put his attorney general on the chopping block, he still has a friend in the White House - or at least it seems like that form the outside.
