Kyrie Irving is a no question star in this league, but there remain very real questions about how a team centered around him would perform over the long term.
What in the holy Hell is going on in Cleveland?
Remember, it was Irving, not James, who hit the biggest shot in franchise history to give the Cavaliers their first ever National Basketball Association championship. It was also just a year after his team won a championship against a 73-win Warriors squad.
The Cavs of course already have a three-time MVP in LeBron James.
Free agent point guard Derrick Rose is in serious contract talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers, per ESPN. Plus, Irving may want out still and could leave in 2019 anyway.
So, where should Irving end up?
Given that the Timberwolves sit now on Irving's list of preferred destinations, along with the Spurs, Heat and Knicks, Irving's bond with USA Basketball teammate Butler is legitimate. Irving and Porzingis could be a formidable duo in the Eastern conference.
Irving was born in Australia but grew up in West Orange, N.J., less than 30 miles from New York City.
Still, imagine Irving playing alongside Kawhi Leonard. that could be fun. Teams with a bevy of young players like the Nuggets, Denver, and the Kings don't have the same kind of win now add-on pieces that will keep the Cavaliers from losing too much competitive ground next season. In 2007, they had several in Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Joakim Noah, Thabo Sefolosha and a then-27-year-old Kirk Hinrich.
For my money, I think this move would benefit all parties involved. An LBJ/Melo/Love threesome doesn't seem so bad.
Cleveland recorded losing records in his first three seasons before James returned.
But in spite of all that, the Knicks are not a awful option for newly minted Cavaliers GM and Griffin disciple Koby Altman.
A report from ESPN's Ian Begley claimed that the Knicks would be willing to create a package deal, including Carmelo Anthony and an unspecified number of future first-round picks, in order to land Irving.
Man. The last six weeks in Cleveland have been wild.
The Mavs just drafted Dennis Smith, Jr., but are otherwise stuck with a roster consisting of vets eager to compete and rooks looking to snag some minutes.
It is unclear if James and Irving have spoken with each other since Irving made the trade request. There are a lot of teams that are now offering the Cavaliers' Point Guard. Irving averaged 25.9 points in his third straight Finals, but he and James couldn't do enough to match the Warriors, who took back their crown after adding Kevin Durant last summer.
