As ESPN's Bob Harig reported, Grace became the first player in history to shoot 62 in a major championship.
Phil Mickelson and eventual victor Henrik Stenson both shot 63 in last year's Open at Royal Troon, while Justin Thomas became the 29th player to achieve the feat in last month's US Open. Branden Grace fired that number at Royal Birkdale to set the all-time single round record at any of the four major championships.
Grace's round was eight under the course par of 70. But, it took just one day for him to push himself right back into content, and he did so in record-breaking fashion.
The 29-year-old South African did it with a strong finishing kick birdieing Nos.
On the par-36 back nine, Grace began with four pars before putting a circle on the card on the par-3 14th.
Beginning the day 10 strokes adrift of midway leader Jordan Spieth, Grace rolled in from 15 feet at the first and followed a birdie at the fourth with a two-putt gain at the par-five next. He drained a 40-footer on 16 for an unlikely birdie, then tacked on another birdie on 17.
With history on the line, Grace's approach to the last ran just off the back of the green, but he calmly two-putted from long range to complete a brilliant round.
