Kyrie Irving wants off the Cleveland Cavaliers and requested a deal for this to happen, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst. The Knicks are among the teams that Irving, a New Jersey native, would like to be traded to, ESPN reported. San Antonio has made the playoffs in 20 consecutive seasons and won five championships in that time.
Irving, 25, is coming off the best season of his career which includes his third-straight trip to the Finals. Irving is under contract fortwo more years, and the Cavs could decide to hold onto him in hopes of repairing the relationship.
Additionally, Windhorst reported LeBron James was "disappointed" to learn of Irving's request. That, in turn, could be part of Irving's desire to escape an uncertain situation in Cleveland.
According to ESPN's sources, Irving has expressed dissatisfaction playing alongside the NBA's biggest celebrity, LeBron James. One of the best teams in recent memory is in danger of falling apart, either now or later. The Rockets are another. It's always possible that a trade was discussed in these meetings as well as any number of other topics. Maybe now fans can see why this isn't awful news for the Cavaliers organization: if Irving is not willing to take a backseat to arguably the greatest player in National Basketball Association history, what does that say about his character and desire to win?
The Cavaliers are looking to build around LeBron James with another All Star... maybe Carmelo Anthony? "Does he go to Cavs without Kyrie & LBJ gone in 2018?" "We are respectfully going to keep those private".
The Cavs are in advanced talks with point guard Derrick Rose on a one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $2.1 million. The Knicks are seeking a trade partner for 10-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony, who is close friends with James. Apparently, he also doesn't want to play alongside James any longer.
Who the Cavs end up obtaining will be vitally important in the years ahead, primarily because of the fact that James can leave as a free agent after the 2017-18 season if he chooses.
The Cleveland Cavaliers' tumultuous offseason reportedly got rockier last week.
