The family film received an A- on CinemaScore from kids and teens; but adults surveyed panned the film, giving it an overall grade of B, which is very poor considering that most animated films tend to score an A or A-.

The animated movie that follows the antics of a meh emoji (voiced by T.J. Miller) won the Friday box office with $US10 million.

The Christopher Nolan movie reportedly had a budget of under $100 million, so this is a huge success for the film! The critical reception might have impacted its box office performance.

Warner Bros.' "Dunkirk" and Sony's "The Emoji Movie" were neck and neck the entire weekend, but "Dunkirk" has taken the weekend with an estimated $US28.1 million, according to Variety.

"We've been able to hit female empowerment in the movie industry and bring females in the spotlight whether it's onscreen or behind the camera", Focus Features distribution chief Lisa Bunnell said of Atomic Blonde.

But it was still a very strong opening weekend for Oscar victor Charlize Theron's ass-kicking spy flick considering the entire budget was only $30M.

Girls Trip came in at number three this week, with an additional $20.0 million earned this weekend.

Dunkirk blew past expectations when it saw its wide release on July 21, and brought in over $50 million for its first weekend in American theaters.
