It was from Fernando Alonso, who skipped this year's Formula One race to run in the Indianapolis 500.

Takuma Sato won the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday to give Andretti a second consecutive victory in "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing".

Victory can't be put beyond the leader in any running of the Indy 500, but the fact that no grid-leader has gone on to win the race since Helio Castroneves did so in 2009 is a worrying statistic for Dixon.

Castroneves also won here in 2001, 2002 and 2009.

Sato is the first Japanese driver to win the race. As a rookie in 2006, he finished as the 500 runner-up. But I can not say that I will play it safe at the beginning of the race because everyone else will take advantage of that. What a race, man. I would feel 100 percent the same.

"This vehicle has generated and continues to generate so much passing and change", Rahal said.

"Well, when I saw the 77 went into the wall, I knew it would bounce back". We'll see. It's a stat I've been hearing quite a lot this week.

Brazil's Tony Kanaan, the 2013 victor, had the third best effort followed by 2008 champion and pole sitter Scott Dixon of New Zealand.

Kimi Raikkonen, the Finnish team mate who had led from pole for almost half the race, stared straight ahead and set about glugging the champagne as soon as he could.

As Alonso continued to push, he became the third Honda driver to suffer an engine failure as he came towards the start/finish with around 20 laps remaining, his vehicle grinding to a halt. "Who knows what position we could have been?" How it all panned out, the super-soft was not quick enough and Sebastian was able to pull out some stunning laps on the used ultra-soft. "But to come away with the points I have, I can honestly move away from this and move forward".

There was tremendous buzz around the Spanish star, who is attempting to win the Triple Crown of racing.

His F1 team, McLaren-Honda, has struggled with vehicle reliability this season, and if there was ever a Monaco Grand Prix - one of the best races on the F1 calendar - to miss, this would be the one. He was met with a warm reception and often said he was overwhelmed by the fan reception.

Rossi is part of the massive effort from Andretti Autosport, which expanded to six cars when it took on Alonso last month.

Button came out of retirement for this race to fill in for Alonso. Before Alonso's failure, 2014 victor Ryan Hunter-Reay lost his engine. "The champion is coming out", Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene said after the session."Sebastian made a mistake in Turn Five but having two cars up there means I'm happy". Wehrlein's vehicle was flipped on its side against the tyre wall and fence, with the German driver trapped inside and marshals unable to do anything about it, after Button went down the inside in what looked like a wildly optimistic attempt to pass. Button parked his damaged auto at the other end of the tunnel with the safety vehicle deployed. According to a tweet from "IndyCar Series" both drivers were cleared and released.
