In remembering all military veterans, memories of their service come to mind by veterans who still are alive, and their families on Memorial Day.
One by one, and grave by grave, the members of the Old Guard plant the flags as a way to honor and remember the dead.
Several cities now claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Macon and Columbus, Georgia, Richmond, Virginia, Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, Waterloo, New York and Carbondale, Illinois. "A lot of people walk on it and different things like that", Read said.
Memorial Day, a national holiday in honor of those who died in war, has its origins dating back to the Civil War.
"Everyone who served for us, they deserve to be remembered for their courage and their act", said Boy Scout Clay Brooks.
On Monday, a Memorial Day ceremony at Fort Rosecrans will take place at 10 a.m.at the Rostrum.

10 a.m. Monday, the Natural Bridge Fire Department will hold a parade starting at its station on 27570 High St., followed by a chicken barbecue.
