Despite playing the full 90 minutes just once for Saints in the last nine months, Dutch boss Dick Advocaat has now included the centre-back in his updated squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Sweden.
However, Southampton refused to alter their stance and Van Dijk remained at St Mary's beyond the close of the transfer window.
Liverpool were forced to apologise and publicly end their interest in Van Dijk in June, after it transpired that he had set his sights on a move to Anfield following talks with Jurgen Klopp.
Van Dijk missed a large chunk of last season through injury, and his return to the team was delayed following a summer of speculation regarding his future.
'Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what's possible'.
Van Dijk, however, continued to air his grievances as the summer window dragged on, but the club held firm against his transfer request wish.
Sunday's 1-1 draw away to Newcastle United saw Matip and Lovren caught out by a low pass straight through from Jonjo Shelvey, allowing Joselu to equalise.
Van Dijk made his first appearance for the Dutch national side in 2015 and has since gone on to earn 12 caps - he could potentially feature in defence alongside fellow Saint Wesley Hoedt.
Speaking to Ferdinand, the 25-year-old said: "I think Sturridge when he is fit. I'm glad it's over", he added.
