The New York Yankees got to their hotel in Baltimore around 3 a.m. after beating the Boston Red Sox in a Sunday night game. Baltimore (70-68) sits 1 1/2 games behind the Twins.
NY is also just 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Boston Red Sox in the AL East.
After exchanging jabs about sign stealing on Tuesday afternoon, both the Yankees and Red Sox played well into the night.
"This is a huge game for us", Trumbo said.
Gary Sanchez will start serving his three-game suspension on Monday, which leaves Romine to do the catching today and quite possible for the next two games. The win was his third walk-off hit of the season - all of them home runs and all within the past month. "This is the time of the year, if you're going to make a push, we need to do it now. It's in the past".
Tim Beckham gave Baltimore an early lead when he led off the first with a homer off rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery. Erik Kratz is available if needed.
"It's special because ... you've got to beat those guys", Showalter said. "I've seen it done in the past".
It was a big, big win for the Orioles: They're now just one game back of the Angels for the second wild card, in the middle of a pile-up that includes eight teams all within 5.5 games of each other for the two spots. Despite the setback Monday and a seven-game division deficit, the AL East title remains the ultimate goal, manager Buck Showalter said. "It's the world we live in", Girardi said. The games inch by little by little. He was phenomenal in his last start, allowing only a bunt single in a complete-game one-hitter as he struck out 12 and walked two. "So, you try to stay focused on yourself". Even though his most mammoth homer - a 470-foot blast that in April that was the first ball hit over the center-field restaurant at Yankee Stadium - was against NY, he entered Tuesday hitting just.184 against the Yankees. Luis Severino gave up an unearned run on two hits with nine strikeouts over six innings to get the win. "That one just didn't do anything and he was able to punish it". Sabathia knows the Orioles well, going 19-10 with a 3.47 ERA in 40 starts against them.
Baltimore Orioles minus-125 vs.
Baltimore's Jeremy Hellickson (8-8, 5.15 ERA overall) will be trying to bounce back from a shaky outing Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Then Machado followed with his third game-ending home run since August 18.
"Command was a little off", Hellickson said. "I had Beckham 3-1 and just threw a fastball in there to get back into the count and he put a good swing on it". He's allowed two earned runs or less in five of six starts since the move to the Bronx. Just like that, there was a five-spot up there.
Kevin Gausman (10-9, 4.79 ERA) will take the mound for the Orioles in the series finale against the Yankees' Sonny Gray (8-9, 3.36). The right-hander, who began the season with the Philadelphia Phillies, has not faced the Yankees this year.
