Tropical Depression Thirteen has formed in the southwest Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles east of Tampico, Mexico. Strengthening is forecast and Katia could become a hurricane before it approaches the coast of Veracruz in a couple of days. The amount of rain and strength of the winds will depend on the exact track the system takes in the days ahead.

-Katia could eventually attain hurricane strength before making landfall.

Forecasters said the storm is expected to turn southeast within 24 hours and move in that direction through Thursday. However, it continues to grow stronger as it feeds off the very warm water over the Bay of Campeche. However, Jose is expected to strengthen and could become a hurricane by Friday, the hurricane center said.

-Heavy rainfall and gusty winds will be possible in eastern Mexico late week into this weekend. Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said the storm is expected to stay off the coast of Mexico through Friday morning. Apart from Veracruz, Southern portions of the state of Tamaulipas may also feel the effects of the storm.

Jose, the 10th named storm so far this season, had winds of 40 miles per hour.

Irma's path is forecast to keep it just north of the Caribbean islands, so it doesn't appear that interaction with land will weaken the powerful storm.
