As for the violence in the country, Mexico's foreign ministry said it would "only end if its root causes are addressed: high demand for drugs in the United States and supply from Mexico (and other countries)".
"Mexico will not negotiate NAFTA, nor any other aspect of the bilateral relationship through social networks or the media", the statement added.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that it won't pay for the wall at the border with the US.
Earlier in the day, Trump wrote on his Twitter that given Mexico's high crime rates, the border wall that would curb the inflow of migrants to the United States was necessary, adding that "Mexico will pay for it through reimbursement/other".
We are in the NAFTA (worst trade deal ever made) renegotiation process with Mexico & Canada. Both being very hard, may have to terminate?
'We are in the NAFTA (worst trade deal ever made) renegotiation process with Mexico & Canada. Both being very hard, may have to terminate?' Trump tweeted Sunday morning.
The trade agreement was signed by former President Bill Clinton, the husband of Trump's political rival Hillary Clinton, who he beat in the November presidential election previous year.
And the Hill reported Democrats are opposed to including funds for the wall in the bill. "We can not say that anymore because if you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I can not live with that".
Trump had several times promised Mexico would pay for the wall, but Mexico has so far refused.
Mexico also reiterated that it wouldn't pay for Trump's much-touted border wall, calling its position on the matter "a principle of national sovereignty and dignity".
"But the fact is we are both in a little bit of a political bind because I have to have Mexico pay for the wall - I have to", he added.
