Australian Olympic champion Betty Cuthbert has died aged 79, after suffering multiple sclerosis.

Betty Cuthbert carries the torch in a wheelchair pushed by former sprinter Raelene Boyle, during the opening ceremony of Sydney's Olympic Games in 2000.

Cuthbert, who added a gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo to her three from Melbourne, was the first Australian inducted into the worldwide track and field federation's Hall of Fame.

She also won gold in the 4x110 yards relay at the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games, and set nine world records during her glittering career.

Her lunge at the line in the 100m at the Melbourne Olympics is captured in bronze outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground, scene of her 1956 track and field glory.

Cuthbert's fourth gold came after a short-lived retirement, when she took out the 400m at the Tokyo games.

She was an Olympic torch bearer at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and grew up in the city's western suburbs.

She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1974 and battled the disease for many years after retiring from her sporting career.

In 1985 Cuthbert was elected into the Australian Sports Hall of Fame.

Tributes poured in for Cuthbert on Monday morning, with radio broadcaster Alan Jones describing her as a legend.
