As reported by WHNT News, Ivey has authorized the Alabama National Guard to deploy two CH-47 Chinook Helicopters and two UH-60M medical aircraft to aid those performing rescue and recovery in Texas.
"The word catastrophic does not appropriately describe what we're facing", said U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas.
Three days after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced Monday night the Alabama National Guard was being deployed to the Lone Star State to assist in recovery efforts.
Gen. James Whitham, the director of the Air National Guard, said as many as 30,000 service members from neighboring states are on standby, and could be ready to go. "They present a hazard for our crews operating those helicopters in the region".
Seven fixed-wing aircraft from the U.S. Coast Guard and Air National Guard are in support, he added, and the Texas National Guard is using about 200 Humvees, 218 high-water vehicles, 15 wreckers and 19 fuelers.
Greg Abbott says the state has now activated 3,000 National Guard and State Guard members as a result of severe damage and flooding from Hurricane Harvey.
Guardsmen have also rescued 300 pets.
Though Harvey has been downgraded to a tropical storm, it remains over the Gulf of Mexico and has gained some strength.
Col. Hapgood said the call hasn't come in yet, but as the water continues to rise, so will the likelihood that the Iowa National Guard will be going to Houston.
There are also 400 active duty troops in Louisiana in preparation for heavy storms there.
Witham said another 4,000 Guardsmen will be joining the effort in the next 24 hours.
"Being ready and in place is as important as any training that we do, and our engagements at parish level are absolutely critical", said Army Maj. Gen. "The state continues to pre-position equipment and materiel in advance of anticipated large flooding".
