Elon Musk has shared a photo of what they're going to wear.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has left the netizens baffled after posting the first photo of a SpaceX spacesuit that his company created.
Designing a spacesuit for astronauts is surely not an easy task. The company already has drone ships called "Just Read the Instructions" and "Of Course I Still Love You", both borrowed from the works of Iain M. Banks, so it's no wonder its spacesuit looks as if it's straight out of a Ridley Scott film.
Boeing was also awarded a $4.2 billion contract for developing CST-100 Starliner capsule and conducting at least two crew rotation missions for the American space agency. For commercial flights to and from the space station, these suits will be worn during launch and reentry, or if a problem occurs causing the capsule to depressurize.
SpaceX scientists are now working on a crew version of their Dragon cargo capsule to carry NASA astronauts into space.
Although he offered few details in his sneak-peek Instagram post - "More in the days to follow", a brief message promises - the tech billionaire, who is also chief executive of automaker Tesla, indicated that his spacesuit is functional and tested to withstand pressure loss while traveling through space. It has already undergone double vacuum pressure tests. Worth noting that this actually works [not a mock-up].
SpaceX and Boeing are poised to become one of the first private companies to send humans into Space.
Last December, SpaceX announced that its SpaceX's Crew Dragon spaceship would not be ready until at least May 2018. In January, Boeing revealed its own spacesuit design that astronauts will wear on route to the ISS.
Both their suits are mainly designed for commercial travel and are not meant for spacewalks, according to The Verge. Musk revealed it was a hard task for engineers to balance functions and esthetics in this suit. That alone could be a potentially interesting look on where form and utility merge.
Musk might disagree. The image he released Wednesday is refined, exhibiting the considerable attention he gives not only to his products' function but to the sophistication and simplicity of their design. Anything you'd like to add, remove, or revise?
