An worldwide warrant was issued for his arrest and Schaffhausen police were helped by police forces from neighbouring cantons in their search. They gave no further details and said police in Schaffhausen would hold a news conference on Wednesday morning.
The suspect was found by police near Zurich, some 60km from the insurance office in Schaffhausen where he had injured two employees with a chainsaw on the previous day.
Swiss police on Tuesday arrested a man in connection with a chainsaw attack which left three people injured on Monday.
Police put the centre of Schaffhausen into lockdown and launched a manhunt for the suspect they identified as 51-year-old Franz Wrousis.
A helicopter and dogs were used to scour the area for any trace of the alleged suspect, who has two previous convictions for weapons offences.
It was not clear what may have prompted the man to assault the two office workers, one of whom was badly hurt. Police said they don't yet know how and when Wrousis got there.
Authorities say Wrousis, a client of health insurer CSS, targeted the agency, although a motive remains unclear. Three other people suffered various injuries amid the fracas but none of the victims was in a critical condition, public broadcaster RTS reported.
One of the injured remained hospitalized and another had been released, the police said.
In recent weeks, Wrousis was seen several times in forests just south of Schaffhausen. As the manhunt continued, the insurance company said it was keeping its offices in Schaffhausen and five other nearby towns closed for now "in view of yesterday's attack".
Police had described Wrousis as potentially unsafe and warned he might be armed.
It shows a tall, balding man with short brown hair walking along a street in a green jacket carrying a large black bag, which they said may have contained the chainsaw.
