Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett, reporting from Jerusalem, said the Palestinians reportedly exchanged fire with Israeli police officers near the Dung Gate of the Old City.

A number of people were wounded in the attack, police told AFP. The terrorists then fled into the Temple Mount area which resulted in a for chase by Israeli police.

Two of those injured were critically hurt and were receiving life-saving treatment, according to ambulance personnel.

While a number of attacks have occurred around Jerusalem's Old City, they have often involved knives. Israeli police had a tense gun battle with the terrorists and killed all three.

The compound houses the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third-holiest site, and is also venerated by Jews as the Temple Mount and is considered the most sacred place in Judaism.
