To help gamers get by the wait for the first "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" downloadable content (DLC), "The Master Trials", assistant director Daiki Iwamoto talked a bit about the subject of the expansion - the Phantom.
While Midna's helmet is a physical manifestation of power shadow magic in Twilight Princess, the equipment grants "Guardian Resist Up" to Link's defense in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This game featured a "goblin/devilkin" type character who had qualities reminiscent of Midna's personality. This character was described as an imp with "the appearance looks like a monster or a child", "can't tell if she's enemy or ally", "can't really tell what she's thinking", "sometimes selfish, but sometimes cute and naïve". I'm also a big Zelda fan, so any design documents from the series pique my interest regardless of how mundane they may be. But it wasn't always that way, as Takizawa noted that before Midna was placed, a placeholder of Tetra from Wind Waker was used, riding on top of Wolf Link. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available on Nintendo Switch as well as the Wii U. The Master of Trials DLC is coming to both platforms with drastically different file sizes.
This is pretty important for the subset of players that are sticking with Breath of the Wild on Wii U. That console never had a huge hard drive, so downloads are quite limited, unless you add an SD card or external hard drive. If you click over to the blog post, you can see early designs where Midna looks more like a goblin than her final design.
