The airline took to Twitter on Sunday to defend itself after being bashed by Ann Coulter for allegedly giving her "carefully chosen" seat to another passenger.

The commentator and best-selling author had tweeted a photo of the passenger who was seated in her pre-booked seat for an unexplained emergency and ripped the passenger in another tweet as "the dachshund-legged woman".

The right-wing pundit's ire began after she was moved from her pre-booked seat on a flight from NY to Florida.

"If you thought it was about $30, @Delta, why didn't you give this woman $30 and let me stay in my PRE-BOOKED, ASSIGNED seat?" she wrote, sharing a picture of the woman who was placed in her seat. "I have pictures so don't lie, @Delta!"

Here is what reportedly happened: Coulter was flying to West Palm Beach, Florida, from New York's LaGuardia airport when she changed her originally booked window seat to an aisle on the same exit row within 24 hours of the departure.

The airline responded to the tweets Sunday evening, saying it would refund her $30.

Ms Coulter's more than 30 tweets include insults to the passengers, flight crew, Wifi, and corporate employees.

"We are sorry that the customer did not receive the seat she reserved and paid for", Delta said in a statement posted to its website.

"Additionally, your insults about our other customers and employees are unacceptable and unnecessary", the airline said in response to Coulter's tweetstorm.

A look through the airline's past tweets shows a customer service representative tried to contact Coulter at the time of her problem. I would like to look into this further.
