Trump announced Friday he was reversing numerous policies enacted by former President Barack Obama with the Caribbean nation.

Among those with Trump as he announced the policy in Little Havana were Sen.

It is not clear if Trump's directive would affect more than 20 agreements signed by the two countries in recent years.

In an interview, Rhodes said he took solace that Trump, who put new limits on commercial transactions and USA citizens' travel to the island nation, had not ended diplomatic relations. And deciding to unveil the policy in Miami suggests it will please the hardline Cuban exiles whose support Trump considered significant to winning Florida, and the presidency.

"The new line towards Cuba announced by US President Donald Trump takes us back to already half-forgotten rhetoric in the style of the Cold War", the ministry said in a statement on its website.

In a written statement, published on Friday night, the Cuban government called President Trump's announcement a step back in relations.

Record remittances from the U.S.to Cuba are opening up other new economic opportunities for ordinary citizens. "That could bring them under fire now, and they could find themselves much weaker".

The Trump administration says it is changing the policy of the USA toward Cuba by limiting the amount of money that might go toward the Cuban military, restricting American tourism there and reaffirming the 56-year-old trade embargo.

While anti-Castro conservatives hailed Trump's partial roll-back of President Barack Obama's detente, a number of other GOP lawmakers, particularly from farm states, criticized the change as misguided and isolationist.

Obama had pushed for expanding commerce and travel between the two countries.

That could be hard for developers, Zelkowitz said, since the military's control over the economy is so pervasive.

More than two years ago, then President Barack Obama announced plans to "normalize relations" between the USA and Cuban governments, effectively lifting a half-century trade embargo that the US imposed on the island nation in 1963. "Now it turns out that the anti-Cuban discourse is still in high demand", the Russian Foreign Ministry said. I'd transcribe it in the history books. "He was a competitor of mine out of 17 people that ran for President", Rubio said. The problems with this argument are twofold - it exaggerates and underplays the effects of US engagement in Cuba. The effect of this new policy will be strengthening the revolutionary leadership and seeing that it's right.

Rep. Rick Crawford, R-Ark., said Trump's shift is more than just a missed opportunity for rural America, which would benefit from greater access to Cuba's agricultural import market. Its founders frequently travel overseas, including to conferences in the U.S.

"A Cuban small businessman should not be obliged to buy from the only wholesaler that exists now, which is the state", he said. A young state journalist who described himself as loyal to the government but eager to see faster, broader reforms told The Associated Press that the government saw the speech as "the best course in anti-imperialism that could be given".
