Cuomo, within hours of Trump's decision, announced that he had already formed the U.S. Climate Alliance with the governors of California and Washington State, to share information and pool resources to carry out the spirit of the Paris accord.
"The United States, through strong action from local leaders, businesses and investors, remains committed to fulfilling the Paris agreement", said Bloomberg, who serves as the U.N. special envoy for cities and climate change. "Yale will continue our long-standing commitment to reductions in carbon emissions first made in 2005, which align with commitments made by the U.S.in the Paris Climate Agreement, despite any decisions by the federal government".
Merkel hailed private initiatives around the world on climate protection, including in the United States, saying they would help ensure "more prosperity and opportunities for the world". "After speaking with Governors Cuomo and Scott, our administration looks forward to continued, bipartisan collaboration with other states to protect the environment, grow the economy and deliver a brighter future to the next generation".
The alliance will convene US states that are "committed to taking aggressive action on climate change", according to Cuomo's office.
Baker and Scott last month urged Trump to continue the USA commitment to the climate agreement.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo - both Democrats - also are joining the alliance. The Paris Agreement is an worldwide agreement meant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat global climate change.
Raimondo said Friday that Trump's action will not deter Rhode Island from taking the steps needed to address climate change. Two post-election surveys conducted by the Yale Program for Climate Communication found that more than two-thirds (69%) of registered voters believed the US should honor the Paris climate agreement-including almost half of Trump voters (47 percent). "The U.S. should lead the global fight against climate change, not withdraw from it", the brand said in a statement. He said he would consider re-entry if the USA could get a better deal.
