The Wall Street Journal editorial board pushed back on Thursday, lambasting the press for crying wolf every time Trump opens his mouth.
U.S. President Donald Trump has rebuked his fellow alliance leaders for not being "fair" to the U.S. taxpayers.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who attended meetings of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member leaders on Thursday when Trump spoke, said he was confident having heard the USA leader speak that the United States would fulfil its obligations and wanted Europeans to do the same."What I heard from him yesterday in the meeting made me relaxed", he said.
But Trump increased the pressure, calling that agreement made at a summit in Wales in 2014 "the bare minimum".
After meeting with Stoltenberg, Trump met with European Commission leader Jean Claude Juncker, and European Council President Donald Tusk.
The EU's trade focus has turned to the Asia-Pacific region, including some of the 11 nations that were set to join forces with the United States in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, until Trump's rejection of that deal on his first day in office.
With a grimace, Mr. Trump emerges from behind Mr. Markovic and slaps him on the arm. All people who cherish life must unite in finding, exposing and removing these killers and extremists and, yes, losers. "So I really think that the results of the summit are worse than we expected -not only was there no clear commitment to Article 5, there was a repetition of this -I would say over-the-top - suggestion that European allies owe huge amounts of money to the United States".
Some critics pounced, citing this as evidence that Trump won't follow through on America's Article 5 obligations to come to Europe's defense.
Trump pointed out a simple truth, one President Obama complained about more quietly. Notably, he also did not offer an explicit public endorsement of NATO's "all for one, one for all" collective defense principle, though White House officials said his mere presence at the meeting signaled his commitment. "This is why we will indeed make our contribution to security and solidarity in the common alliance", she said.
"My main message to President Trump was that what gives our cooperation and friendship its deepest meaning are fundamental Western values, like freedom, human rights and respect for human dignity", Tusk said.
Mr Trump appeared to have been talking to Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán before the now infamous "shove", who can be seen smiling at the US President until he stands directly in front of him, excluding Mr Orbán from the group's conversation.
