24 de mayo de 2017, 14:52Quito, May 24 (Prensa Latina) Lenin Moreno was inaugurated today as the new president of Ecuador in a solemn ceremony held in the National Assembly (parliament), before some Latin American presidents and guests.

Congress was due to swear in Moreno, 64, at 1500 GMT, as the quieter successor to one of the feistiest personalities in Latin American politics: Rafael Correa.

Moreno, one of the world's few paraplegic heads of state, has said he will continue anti-poverty programs.

His legs have been paralyzed since he was shot during a robbery in 1998.

The big question now is whether Moreno, a former Nobel Peace Prize candidate, will try to distance himself from his powerful predecessor and political patron, who pushed through a number of deep structural reforms in Ecuador and has been accused, over the years, of making a number of authoritarian power plays.

President for a decade, Correa, 54, is one of a generation of colorful leftist leaders who governed the mineral-rich region over recent decades.

And unlike his allies in Brazil, Argentina and Peru, his side managed to win re-election this year. The official farewell of President Rafael Correa also took place.

China is willing to work with Ecuador to promote exchanges at various levels, deepen political mutual trust, and increase exchange of experience on governance, said Chen. Moreno was Correa's first vice president.
