Despite taking 10 shots on goal, Jack Eichel was not able to solve Thomas Greiss in Germany's 2-1 win over the U.S.in the first game of the IIHF World Hockey Championships. The U.S. was 0-for-2 on the power play, while Germany finished 1-for-2.
Both teams seemed to test each other for the most of the opening period, but with six minutes remaining it was Sweden's forward Elias Lindholm to open the score as he shot the puck into the net behind Russian goaltender Andrei Vasilevski. After the next two skaters also missed, left-winger Panarin scored.
The Germans were brimming with confidence from beating the Americans 2-1 and this match was well poised at 2-2 early into the second period in Cologne.
