Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez passed Jared Borgetti as Mexico's all-time leading scorer on Saturday when his goal in their 2-1 defeat to Croatia took his tally to 47.

A strong Mexico side was troubled early on by a young and inexperienced Croatia team, with Juan Carlos Osorio's XI struggling to create chances and the visitors finding space on the counter-attack.

Croatia almost opened the scoring just after the 20-minute mark when Jakov Filipovic got free right in front of the Mexico goal and almost headed Nikola Vlasic's corner kick home.

Croatia's goal led to things to unravel on the field, and Croatia quickly grabbed a second when a Diego Reyes howler led to Fran Tudor scoring the 2-0.

The goal made for an exciting finale, with Croatia goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic denying Hector Moreno from point-blank range. The record is in the bag, but he's just 28 years old - he'll turn 29 next month - and has the remainder of World Cup qualifying, the Confederations Cup, the World Cup and a slew of friendlies in the next 13 months alone.

El Tri received a small boost in the 77th minute when Mile Skoric was sent off for a double yellow, leaving Croatia down to ten men. He's not just going to set Mexico's record - he's going to smash it.
