The teenager was dropped at the centre by a good Samaritan, believed to be named Nicole, who saw the girl running down a street and picked her up in her auto.

NSW Police Acting Superintendent Mick Haddow told reporters on Friday it had been a very hard investigation and they were continuing to piece together her movements, where she was held and whether she had any relatives in Australia.

Sean Price, 39, is behind bars in a NY jail accused of contacting the 16-year-old from Lindfield on Sydney's upper north shore on Snapchat in October 2016 and enticing her overseas for sex.

"There are cultural issues, language issues".

According to investigators, the girl was brought to Australia from Guinea by a man she met there who told her he could get her work as a cleaner.

She told staff she had been dropped off by a woman who found her after she had escaped from a house, where she had been held captive and regularly sexually assaulted.

"The girl has since returned to Australia".

"It's really vague descriptions about units, we don't know what suburbs we are talking about at this stage", Mr Sheehan said.

Once she arrived, Mr Price hired a auto and drove the teenager across the country to New York City, US police believe.

She continued to run as she fled from the home until she was picked up by an unknown woman who drove her to the Asylum Seeker Centre in Sydney's inner west.

The girl was then taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital before being placed into the care of Family and Community Services.

"Our thoughts are with both the student and her family at this hard time", the principal of the school, on Sydney's north shore, said in a message to parents on Friday.

Police are also looking for the "good Samaritan" who saved her.

Police officers from human trafficking and sex crime squads are investigating.
